Heeeeere’s Jaya! Sunday I saw our zoo’s new female red panda for the first time, so here’s a photo of our shy newcomer.
Red Panda Fact #7 - The first red panda in a western zoo arrived at the London Zoo on May 22nd, 1869, under the care of A.D. Bartlett. However, British naturalist and red panda expert Brian Houghton Hodgson mentioned in his papers that he’d kept several for an extended period of time. While there is some evidence that red pandas were kept as pets from time to time in their natural range, this doesn’t appear to have been a regular practice.
